The 26th state of the United States, Michigan has an estimated population for 2007 of 10,071,822. The capital city of Lansing is just one of the states highly populated cities. Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, a water boundary of Minnesota, and several of the Great Lakes make up the borders of Michigan.
Michigan’s name comes from a Chippewa word that means “Great Water”. The state has two nicknames. One of them, “The Wolverine State”, is due to a couple of reputed comparisons of people in the territory being compared to wolverines. The other, the “Great Lake State” stems from the fact that four of the five great lakes touch Michigan at some point.
Eighty-three counties make up the state, which has a topography that includes hills, swamps, and lakeside shorelines. Michigan’s altitude ranges from 572 feet to 1,980 feet.
Some of the industries found in Michigan are fruits such as blueberries and apples, dairy, vegetables, grains, cattle and hogs, food processing, tourism, metals, and motor vehicles.
