Since the hugely successful bug, VW has had some winners like the Rabbit, Golf, and GTI. What VW is counting on is that people who are coming into their own, who can finally afford to buy a Mercedes will instead during a flashback of how much fun they had going to the beach in an 87 Cabriolet will stumble into a VW dealership and drop 70 large on a 8 cylinder Phaeton. The problem is that VW has never been a reach car; their 40 K W8 Passat was not very successful because VW have always been a starting out brand. The VW Bug convertible ranks #1 among sixteen year olds buying brand new cars. The question then is which sixteen year olds are buying new cars? The answer is rich sixteen year olds. The truth is that VW cars have been the toys of the rich for some time now. The challenge for VW is to convince the rich that VW can be a luxury brand as well. The VW has been associated with affordability for a very long time with sayings like you don’t go to the prom in a VW. Maybe they should have gone into the motor home business where their toy/fun car image would thrive. Nonetheless the new Phaeton (pronounced fay-ton) is one amazing ride. Sitting in the driver’s seat it has that special “master of the universe” feel that you only get when you know you are the biggest dog with the coolest car.
So far I haven’t scene a Phaeton on the road; I have scene a Maybach and a Ferrari F40. Not all car companies can make cars for every single individual; neither Infinity nor Lexus has put out a luxury flagship vehicle approaching 100 grand. The marketplace is fast and furious cars become legends even before they reach the pavement. The invisibleness of this new car makes it hard for me to believe that they will sell even 25,000 before they retire the model name. In today’s marketplace retro is very hot, VW should look back towards its winners the Microbus, Thing and GTI and go to town with more trim options and upgrades. VW would have done better to have introduced a tricked out version of the bug at $40,000 then this poor mans Audi at a Mercedes price.
