The reason why I waited for the road tests of the new Z06 rather then evaluate the C6 Vette is rather simple. The Corvette has been around for about fifty years. Many of these cars are still on the road, probably a higher percentage of vintage, (pre70), corvettes on the street then any other car model including the 911 Porsche Turbo. For this reason the C6 Vette is not fundamentally a new car. However the Z06 brings three elements to the table that can not be ignored. First, with its 7 liter 500 horsepower aluminum block, it has one of the most powerful engines that are available on any production car. Second, by using an aluminum space frame to save 135 pounds instead of the traditional steel, they are announcing that this car is built for speed. The third factor of why this car is important is that it will retail for about $72k.
By adding 100 horsepower over the 2005 C6 while lowering its actual weight by about 100 pounds the guys a General Motors have created a car that can hold its own on the drag strip. To give you an idea of how fast of a car this is consider the fact that it has over 3 and ½ times as much power as those legendary mid fifties Corvettes. If you are wondering why you should shell out an extra 30 grand just for 100 horsepower and a 3.8 second zero to 60 time consider this; you could drop $450k on a Mercedes SLR McLaren or a Porsche Carrera GT and not get much of a performance bump. To get the feel of the soul of this car take a look at the 325/30ZR19 rear tires by Goodyear. These EagleF1 run flats mounted on these incredible 5 spoke wheels look as nice as anything on the road.
