The new 2005 Cadillac STS with the V8 wins my best new car showroom deal of the year. Recently I visited the dozen or so new car dealers that make up the car dealer strip on Eleventh Avenue in Manhattan. Although there were some good deals on New Hummers and Ford thunderbirds the deal that knocked my socks off was on the STS. They had a brand new one in a copper like brown color on sale for $49,995. This vehicle still had its 2005 window sticker on which read $63,905 that’s over 27% off list. The reason the dealer could make this deal was because GM was giving a huge rebate on all new car purchases. What I personally liked about the price is that when I go to trade this car in, in 4 years and they tell me it’s only worth 24 grand, I will think to my self that this car held almost half its value. Furthermore, the car came with nice rims, a sunroof and an in dash 6 cd changer, all included in something called the LF package with a list price of 11k.

      How I came to notice the STS in the first place is I saw it parked out in front of the bagel place where I buy breakfast each morning. I tend to notice a lot of cars, but this car had a look that just stood out from all of the rounded edge cars that I see on the street so much these days. When I saw this car in the showroom I came to learn that it comes with all-wheel drive, a Nurburgring-developed chassis, navigation and 320 horsepower. Although no one would call this car race bred, it has enough road feel to compete with the BMW 5 series and the Lexus 430, both of them. The reasons I like this car are two fold. Cadillac, even after the Cimarron and the Opel disguised as a Cadillac, is still a premium brand. There is enough cache in the name to make people want to drive a new one. This Cadillac has enough new design features to play the role of thoroughbred luxury car.  But far more importantly, if you can save ten grand on the price of a new one, being able to tell this story, a story that might some day be fascinating. Dealers did not always discount cars; we may see a day come when all cars are ordered because it only takes a few days (or hours) to get the exact car that you want. At FAO Swartz in Manhattan you can have a custom made hot wheel in fifteen minutes that you pick every aspect of the car. Once dealers only fill orders we can expect to see the days of the huge discount off sticker price disappear.
